MSPB digs into DOD furlough appeals The Merit Systems Protection Board said it expected to have most of the wave of furlough appeals that have poured into the agency docketed shortly after Labor Day. Last month MSPB said that as of Aug. 21, it had received more than 30,000 furlough appeals, 98 percent of them from employees of Defense Department agencies and military branches. MSPB said it also has received more than 5,000 appeals on other matters appealable to MSPB. At that time, MSPB said it had dock- eted 16,571 of the furlough appeals, and that it continues to review the claims so that similar cases can be consolidated where appropriate in order to speed up adjudication. The board said it expects to begin adjudicating the DOD fur- lough appeals shortly after it finishes docketing the 30,000 it has received. “As we stated in our last update, MSPB regrets any inconvenience to individuals who have filed appeals,” the board stated on its website. “However, it is necessary for the Board to docket the furlough appeals it has received before it can begin the consolidation and adjudication pro- cess. It would be inefficient for the Board to begin adjudicating certain furlough appeals, only to discover that furlough appeals raising similar arguments, filed by similarly situated employees, remain to be docketed. In short, MSPB hopes to consolidate and adjudicate as many simi- lar claims as possible, and this cannot be done until the docketing process is near completion.” See more at: www.mspb.gov/index_ DOD.htm.
